Southern Sailing Foundation

History

History

The Southern Sailing Foundation, a Louisiana non-profit Charitable Foundation was founded in 2014 at the request of the parents of Junior Sailors in the New Orleans area. The initial officers were Scott Sonnier, President; John C. Lovell, III, Vice President; Kelly L. Alfortish, Secretary; and Katherine P. Lovell, Treasurer.   On July 21, 2014, the Foundation received notice of the Internal Revenue Service’s determination that the foundation was exempt from Federal income tax under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  That IRS exemption remains in effect to the current date.

The board was tasked with raising funds to be used to assist local sailors in their quest to accomplish their personal sailing goals whether it is simply to learn the sport or aspirations for Olympic Gold.  Robert “Duff” Friend, a Board member, has been the key person that works with sailors seeking grants.

The Foundation has raised funds by soliciting funds from local companies and holding annual fundraisers.  As a 501(c)(3) organization, all contributions, bequest, devises, and transfers to the foundation are tax deductible.

In the past year, grants have been made to support the local Optimist program with both coaching and travel expenses.  Our grant-giving has now expanded to include junior sailors in the 420 and Laser classes.  Last year, the Foundation successfully completed a campaign to fund training for Junior Sailors in both team and fleet racing.  In addition, the foundation purchased 5 trainer boats for the youngest of our sailors in for the learn to sail program.
